The second day of navarathri was a little sobre. No visitors today and no great offerings from the kitchen to our dear Lord, except for a not-so-interesting 'kondaikadalai' (channa) sundal.
There is nothing great to say about today's tiny kolam in words which this picture cannot express..So, here it is...
Moving on, today's neivedhyam was the sundal as mentioned above, and a basket of apples. Here comes another pic...
There is something special about the apples..It is not the 'bought out' apples, mind you..These are specifically plucked and picked by my kids' tiny hands. Our last weekend was spent on apple picking and fall festival. Looks like apple picking is a must for someone who stays in East coast of the US. We have been postponing it for the last three years. Finally, we did it last sunday.
I am going to try my hand at baking some pies and cakes out of the 20lbs (!!!) of apples that I have at home. Till then - healthy, red delicious apples take your sight :)

The sundal was a simple one. Tasted great. I had it as my dinner. It supposedly brings out some unwanted noises out of our bodies..Yet, moderate quantities do no harm..:)

We drove to Terhune orchards in Princeton, NJ. It is a 45 min drive from where we stay. Apple trees look stunted. They don't grow too tall... They grow in rows. There were about 5-6 varieties of the fruit. What attracted us most was the 'Golden delicious' and the 'Red delicious' varieties. Fruits from most of the front rows trees had fallen down already..As we walked deeper, we could actually pluck them from the trees..It was a freshening experience. I could not resist just biting away a small apple in the farm itself without even washing..straight from the tree. When was the last time we did such a thing?? Faintly remembered, it was from the banana tree at home - long long ago..We used to take out the vazhaippoo and make curry (subzi) out of it. Bringing home the fresh apples has given a whole new perspective of eating them too..:) what was once forced down our throats as 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away', now look very inviting and interesting.
