Day 3 : Simple vadaiparuppu

Today was another not-so-great day. The dolls smiled as usual on the golu. Our darling girl sparkled in her bright green paavadai bordered with maroon zari..

I had made vadaiparuppu (kosumalli) for neivedhyam..It is a simple salad with grated cucumber, carrot and coconut tossed with soaked moong dal, salt and seasoned with mustard seeds and chillies. A dash of lime at the end of it gives a great taste. I also garnished it with finely chopped cilantro. It is actually a great dish..Surprisingly, one of the sundals which do not have the gassy effects on your body, even when consumed in large quantities. With all the veggies, it is a healthy snack too. As usual, filled my dinner plate with this offering..

For some reason, it is called as 'vadaiparuppu' in my household. It does not have any of the paruppu used for making vadai..Wonder where it got the name from. A large part of the Tamizh population calls it as 'kosumalli'...kosu means cabbage and malli means cilantro/coriander. My dish today did not have cabbage either. The reasons for naming our dishes a particular way has to be studied in detail and probably needs a dedicated blog for itself..:)

I am running out of kolams to be drawn on small round stainless steel plates. I managed with the one in the above pic..:) But the little girl comes back from school everyday asking 'amma, did you draw and color today?' which gives an indirect push for me to continue changing this everyday..:)

Just as I started writing day 3 for today, I realized that if Vijayadasami falls on Oct 23rd, we are left with only 8 days of navarathri...I was thinking that as usual, I faultered in maths and this could be the silliest of them all..A little bit of research on google and a chat with the elders at home, brought up a nice explanation..Looks like this year, the tritiya and chathurthi thithis fall on the same day..because of this, as per the English calendar, we will have only ashtaraathri this year..:( this means a lot - eating lesser sundal (thankfully one day less for the people cooking), one day of no pattu paavadai for kutty girls, no tamboolams for sumangalis and all in all, fun of one day lost :(
